Virginia Tech plans to stream a variety of content to student’s multimedia handsets that can be used in formal and informal learning experiences. The City of Seattle has been streaming its television programming to the desktop for over eight years and is now expanding it to the handset. “Any company that’s involved in a fixed computing environment, whether you are in streaming media or new applications, has to start thinking about extending its services out to wireless and mobile devices,” Signorini said. RealNetworks already offers consumer streaming media to wireless devices. Yankee Group analyst Gene Signorini told TechNewsWorld that the Helix Server makes good sense because it is an extension of what the company is already doing. New features include support for SNMP v3 and next generation protocols such as IPv6, as well as improved firewall support and Helix Rate Adaptation for better utilization of network resources. RealNetworks said the server fits within existing operating system environments and supports Windows, Solaris, Linux and Unix-based operating systems for streaming.

Pricing starts at $4,500 for a two-CPU Professional Edition license, the company said.In a bid for mobile business customers, RealNetworks this week unveiled its next generation Helix Server. It has new load-balancing, failover and clustering features to make the product scale more easily, according to Macromedia. Separately this week, Macromedia announced the release of its Flash Media Server 2 content delivery system.

The products compete with software from Microsoft, Macromedia and Apple, among others. Media companies with more than $50 million annual revenue and ISPs with more than 200,000 subscribers aren't eligible to buy the Helix products, according to RealNetworks' Web site. Helix Server Unlimited is the only one for delivering "unlimited" streams, the other two are capped at 25 or 100 streams. RealNetworks has a few Helix server products.

Virginia's Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech) will also use the update to stream content wirelessly to its students, the company said. The City of Seattle, where RealNetworks is based, has been using Helix Server Unlimited to stream television programs to its residents and will now add a service for handsets, RealNetworks said. It is available for several platforms including Solaris, Windows and Linux. The update also adds support for IPv6 and a newer version of the SNMP, and has better firewall security, according to RealNetworks.
